hi all.... first let me say- finding this board yesterday was great... reading about everyone else's great memories of a time that seems unimaginable in South Fallsburg today.  I can kind of say I grew up in South Fallsburg.. my parents were seperated & my Dad grew up and continued to live in S. Fallsburg until the mid-1990s... so I spent every other weekend in town.  But as a little kid, I have memories of running up and down the sidewalks in town al lday while my dad worked in Pop-Ins, shopping at all the little stores... my first pair of shoes were bought at the shoe store right in town... that must have been 1977 or so...

And I LOVE hearing about everyon's memories of Pop-Ins!  Pop-Ins was owned by my Uncle, my father was a cook & every person that worked there for any length of time was family.  I can still remember the day I heard about the fire and how devistated I was.  I got my first puppy handed to my sitting on a stool at Pop-Ins, and my grandmother (who worked the register) would let us eat all the sliced lemons that were sitting on the counter.... I was little then.

When the fire destroyed the restaurant when I was in elementary school, we re-built a bigger, better restaurant right down the street across from the movie theater (which was owned by my family as well).  Gerard's was a nicer "restaurant" as opposed to Pop-Ins... and it was never the same as Pop-Ins....  very sad.  Although Gerards gives me great memories too,  I was older then... my grand parents celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in that building and I had my first Long Island Ice Tea there when I was about 14 years old...  ;-).

The mmovie theater was great too... as a kid, having full access to the building was awesome!  My dad used to use the space in the basement as his workshop for his vehicles and my sister & I would sneak up to watch any movie we could...  And the track is where my other gret memories are from, my grandfather, great uncles, cousins, uncles and my dad, all raced Standardbred's at Minticello & other tracks around the area (Saratoga, Meadowlands, etc)  My Uncle is still PR Director at the track.  But there I remember spedning time in the barns, the warm-up track and in the clubhouse with my grandparents...

Wow.. I could go on & on.. all the great memories I have of growing up there.  I cant drive through town without wanting to cry.  I was VERY different years ago.... although I wasnt someone that visited & stopped coming back... I was there to meet all these new people that came back every summer.  Lots of guys from Brooklyn usually, as for some reason thats who usualy ended up coming to work in the restaurant for the summer.

Having shared all that...  :-)  Is there any chance that anyone has an old photo of Pop-Ins?  I was too young to have taken any photos myself, but would really love to have one.  I do have one old Pop-Ins t-shirt that I will have with me until I die...  ;-)

I also just received news of this site...what great memories were had by all.  I started going to the Catskills when I was 12 ( that seems like ages ago).. I stayed at a bungalow colony right across from The Pines Hotel - it was Nan Acres...We had it made..."Battle of the Bands", then we'd go to the lounge and watch Speedy...and that's when Linda Carter  ( that's wonderwoman for those who are younger than I) sang with them!  Then at the golden age of 18, The Chalet opened !!!!  Huey Jack the DJ,  Octavious...and of course Disco-Dave . Perry Gips - who we all still know- ran the disco..   John was the best bartender in town...Do you all remember those days...the picture slide shows Perry would have casting over the fireplace wall?  I still have those slides.  Everything from Hot Pants to Huck-a poo shirts to Danskin outfits..those were the original days of The Chalet .   Thanks for making a site for the past to become alive again !!!!

You to go back to the 70's and prior to understand the dynamo that the Pines once was.  Women wore their finest jewels and furs on Sat. nights and the food and entertainment were supreme-Times changed and the next generations became more prosperous and didn't want a small room in a hotel with limited activities anymore-I spent 1967-1978 at a bungalow colony across the street-no phones, no TV, usually shared bedrooms, one bathroom-and we couldn't wait to get there each summer!!

I saw your message and was trying to find some people who worked at Camp Olympus in the early 80's.  I worked there in the summer of 84 or 85....Please does anyone know how to reach the owners...The Schwartz family from Staten Island???

Kippie,

My mom knew your dad really well. My mom and I also know your sister, Patti. I worked at the Pines from 88-95.

Yes, it was Scott Yanni.  He was a talented young man.  He dated my sister Patti for awhile.  Lots of entertainers got their start at the Pines and Homowack.  I know because my father - Johnny Greco - was the emcee at both places.  Totie Fields taught me to ice skate at the Homowack.  I grew up roaming the halls of the Pines.  I could hide in the most strange places and noone but my dad would be able to find me.  I have great memories of that place, especially the skating rink.  I worked for Nelson Kulz for years.  He was the skating pro.  Maybe gambling will bring the Catskills back to the forefront again.  Where else can you get 3 meals, entertainment and use of all facilities???

Aquarius2971,

I remember Bear, Steve Weiss. I also know Mark and Brett Irizarry. I went to high school with them at Fallsburg. They were two grades above me. I graduated from Fallsburg in '93.

Hey Robyne..my buddy!!  I met Robyne in 1985 at Brickman's Hotel in South Fallsburg!  I miss that place too!  Our family always went to Brickmans, but we've gone a few times to The Pines Hotel with Robyne and her family when we were teenagers!  God!! I miss that place!  I remember all the fun times..the Chalet dancing, hanging with Robyne and the staff till all hours of the night..watching the staff play baseball at the field! (i still have that on videotape!) I wonder how all those guys are doing..Mark and Brett Irizarry, Gary (Geenice!), Bear, Steve Weiss (who was the manager of that hotel when i went there)...We just had a lot of fun and i miss that place!  I can't believe by looking at those pictures how horrible it looks!  :(  It was a different generation back then...it will never be the same and i always keep those memories alive! Right Robin (and Todd!)..God..friend with you both for 20 YEARS! :)  Take Care! Daria

Alliecat, The bowling alley was called/is called Kiameshia Lanes. It still there and one close friend of my family, her cousin Roy Berger used to work there. Lefty's as been closed for years and still is there was a King Buffet Chinese Restuarant but that folded a few years ago...so now there is just an empty bulilding just sitting there. This area is really sad and I have to say that I am in the midst of planning to move to San Diego where my brother lives now.

There used to be a diner called Poppins in town where the locals and hotel staff would hang out. Monticello was the other place we'd go to. They had Katz's deli and the Raceway. Along the way from the Pine to Monticello the bowling alley (can't remember the name) was another place for recreation. Oh, one other place was Lefty's. They had the best fried ipswich clams and they sold Friehofer chocolate chip cookies. Yum :P

once upon a time there was this wonderful family resort.  up in the catskill region in a town call south fallsburgh, ny.  the place was the pines hotel, my home away from home. i have such fond memories of the place. it was a meeting place for all my family; even my brothers barmitzvah (a 3day weekend affair) was held there.  i knew the erlich family very well, the owners of the hotel. i remember kenny, robby and howard lazzar how they had their hand in raising me and my brother david (always losing things even gloves when they were tied to him).....and who could ever forget about goose if i remember correctly his real name was robert stone.....but of all the lovely people to remember there was sam an amazing waiter always had my breakfast ready for me whether it was in the childrens dining room or the teen alcove in the main dining room....i knew every square corner and hiding spots in the old hotel whether it was the tunnel under the pool where it connected to the marlboro side of the hotel were i used to tell new kids my age stories of the "haunted sections" of the hotel or in this area where the wall moves pass the arcade....i remember speedy garfin still have his tapes in my fathers cars what a jazz player....meeting famous people like alan thicke, riddick bowe, whitney houstan and so so so many more.....there was this club house on top of this steep hill with a playground i remember sleigh riding down that hill many times.  the pines is where i learned to ski and ice skate...for the people who remember this pines hotel in its glory it was a homey place to bring your family; the rooms may have been on the small side but after a week there it was always hard to say goodbye. people pass the hotel now and wonder who would ever stay in a place like this where the grass now is growing through the asphalt and the wall are all vanderlized....it really makes me cry what the pines has become.....the only thing i can do is to keep it alive in my memory and i will in warm place in my heart.  i will never forget the friends i made there and the ones i left behind i love the pines hotel and i always will :'(

I worked there sometime in the 90's.  I lived in the delapidated building across the street from the hotel with Doug and Zory.  I remember two dudes named Kevin, they were both kinda my boss though neither acted anything like it.  I remember going to Monticello to the Nowhere Bar and playing darts.  I remember eating in the employee dining room and having to adjust to a kosher menu.
